Anatolia Story (also called Red River) is about a girl who finds hereself dragged to Anatolia in 1400-1350 B.C., which is the Hittite empire. She was taken there by a queen who was looking to use her blood for a death curse on those standing between her son and the throne. Why her? Queen had used some locator magic to find the most suitable sacrifice, and it picked on her. She escaped with the help of the 3rd prince, who did it first for the fun of it, and later to protect himself, as he was one of the targets of the curse. However, they slowly start falling for each other, but neither can express it, as they both expect the girl to go back as soon as the circumstances are right for the prince to reverse the queen's magic. plus, there is the queen who is constantly plotting to capture the girl or otherwise destroy the princes between her son and the throne, as well as enemies of the Hittites like Mittani and Egypt. Superb romance-action series, great story and good art. The magic in the story is very heavily limited. The queen has a tons of mind control magic, but most of it is easy to spot and lift. And there are no superpowers or magical weapons or suchlike. Its mostly straight fighting skill, brains and political maneouvering. Great, great manga.
Song of Ice and Fire. It is AWESOME, but its a very grim setting. Rape, pillage, honorable people betrayed, backstabbing, an environment where only the strong and the cunning survive. Its the fourth book in the series, and already close to a dozen fairly important (and really nice) people have been killed. The most important characters are the Stark family. The father has been framed and executed, eldest son was assassinated, the mother was killed and is back as a zombie bent on revenge, 2nd son is a neutral military commander, but none of the warring kings believe he is neutral and are plotting to remove him, 3rd son is a cripple who is training as a shaman, 4th son disappeared in the wild, eldest daughter is on the run after being falsely accused of regicide, and younger daughter is trapped on the ocean across fron the continent where this is taking place, and is blinded by poison. Samurai Champloo storyline is simple. Girl wants to search for her father, two swordsmen tag along because she helped them out of a tight spot. Is very good though.
